Based at the UBC School of Music, this research project investigates diverse musical cycles from around the globe, exploring their nature, their properties, and their meanings.
Our project seeks to sketch a portrait of cyclic music in cultures worldwide…
A cycle is a series, associated with a succession of events, that we expect to immediately and persistently repeat.
To obtain maximum diversity we focus on cycles that range widely in length, texture, instrumentation, and social function and that were recorded before globalization accelerated the interaction of musical cultures.
